Ask the pharmacy what happened
An unexpected charge may involve a deductible, a different pharmacy, the exact formulation, a coverage restriction or assistance that was not applied. Ask for the reason for the charge or rejection. Have the medication name, strength, frequency, pharmacy and quoted amount ready. The pharmacy and plan can confirm how the actual claim was processed.
Check Extra Help and premium assistance separately
Extra Help reduces Medicare Part D drug costs for eligible people. Enrollment in SLMB, QMB or QI automatically qualifies a person for Extra Help, but the programs do not all pay the same medical expenses. For example, SLMB pays the Part B premium; the separate Extra Help benefit assists with Part D costs. Verify the subsidy dates and how the plan applied it before comparing standard tier percentages.
Include travel and the dispensing location
A pharmacy that is in-network may not have the lowest cost under the plan. Compare the pharmacy you actually use, including one outside Brown County if needed, and consider travel, refill availability and specialty dispensing requirements. An injection may be billed through the pharmacy benefit or a medical benefit, depending on the circumstances. Confirm the billing route before relying on a drug-tier estimate.
Know who can resolve which question
Brown County Job and Family Services and Ohio Benefits can address benefit applications and state assistance. Your plan and pharmacy handle drug-claim questions. Mark can help compare Medicare coverage and organize the questions, with your permission. He does not prescribe, change treatment or decide assistance eligibility. SBR is based in Cincinnati and assists Brown County residents by telephone, without claiming an office in Georgetown or Mount Orab.
